U.S. paper manufacturers have adopted sustainable forestry practices where<br />
trees are planted, harvested and re-planted to ensure a growing future<br />
supply.  Nearly all paper used for advertising mail is generated from these<br />
sustainably managed forests.  In fact, there are more forests in the U.S.<br />
today than there were 50 years ago.  America&#8217;s forestry and paper community<br />
plants more than 4 million new trees each day &#8211; that&#8217;s more than 1.4 billion<br />
new trees each year.  The industry plants three trees for every one<br />
harvested.</p>

One-third of the wood pulp used to produce paper comes from the wastes from<br />
sawmills; much of the rest comes from ³tree farms² that grow trees as a crop<br />
specifically meant to produce paper (not from old growth trees cut from<br />
endangered forests!). The demand for paper actually provides incentive for<br />
landowners to plant trees rather than convert their acreage to other uses.<br />
Plus, after paper is used, it is one of the most recyclable products<br />
available. When it is not recycled, paper is both biodegradable and<br />
non-toxic.</p>
<p>The constantly repeated mantra, ³don¹t print, save a tree,² has the<br />
potential of undermining a vital channel of commercial communication,<br />
weakening our economy and directly threatening the jobs of hundreds of<br />
thousands of workers employed in the print production and distribution<br />
industry.</p>
